For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV)
Overcoming fear as a Christian, a Jesus follower, can unfold in many different ways. Here’s what it looked like for me recently.
I went horseback riding as I had some friends visiting who wanted to do it so I thought I’d give it a try. I had attempted it before overseas however I realised that being on horseback for the first time, with a fear of heights while going up a mountain with a steep drop, was not a good combination. I bailed and went back to the hotel.
Fast forward 9 years later and I’m nervously watching my guide going through the necessary preparations and getting my friends up on their horses. My turn came around too quickly. I climbed up the steps, put my foot in the stirrup, swung my leg over and sat in the saddle.
Being that high off the ground with nothing to hold onto except flimsy looking reins was terrifying. I kept thinking we haven’t moved and this is already scary, going downhill on horseback cannot be any better! The smart thing to do is to get off this horse, go sit in the car and wait for my friends to come back.
Then the scripture above (2 Tim 1:7) came back to me, as I realised that fear was trying to call the shots. Instead of giving into that spirit of fear, I embraced what God has given me: power, love, strength & confidence and I did it scared. Then after a while I found myself enjoying the ride & taking in the beautiful scenery although there were still some scary moments.
Are you conquering your fear or is your fear conquering you?
