You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)
21 Day Daniel Fasting- Introducing my Journey
At the start of this new year, God prompted me to do a multiple day fast. I had never attempted a fast that lasted longer than a day. I was therefore a bit concerned about what it would involve. After spending time researching online, I was led to the Daniel fast. The more that I read, I felt that this was the one I would try: 21 day Daniel Fasting to press into God and hear from Him for the year unfolding.
With the decision made, I still encountered challenges as I’m a huge fan of meat and fish. The thought of giving it up, even temporarily for 21 days was still a struggle. Nevertheless, I was determined. I researched recipes, planned my meals, looked at areas in which I wanted to seek God and began to prepare for these 21 days.
As this was a first for me, I had no idea what to expect and God still blew my mind. I learnt so much and still had bonuses thrown in as God is so good. For example, a week into my fast, my church leadership invited us as a congregation to go on a 7 day fast. I was able to participate and seek God with my fellow brothers and sisters. This was a unique and special experience which strengthened and united us as a church body. That was certainly an unexpected bonus.
As Christians, we are expected to fast, usually we set aside food/certain types of food but it can be other things, for the purpose of seeking and hearing from God. Then as we focus on God and spend time with Him in prayer while fasting, we hear from Him more clearly, we develop a deeper intimacy in our relationship with God and we can experience breakthrough. There are benefits to be enjoyed but that is not our aim, we seek God first and foremost.
21 Day Daniel Fasting- Learning on the Journey
So what did I learn/gain/experience during my 21 day Daniel Fasting journey? Here are some of my points I noted:
God gave me a few revelations about Himself and His character and this one is one of my favourites. The Bible shows us over and over again that God is faithful to His promises (Abraham & Sarah, Joseph, David to name a few). There are modern-day examples too, this one is current in my mind. As humans we find it difficult to keep believing Him when His timeline doesn’t seem to match ours. We need to remember that our God is faith-full and accept the grace He gives in the wait for the fulfilment of the promises He has given to us knowing that they will come to pass in HIS perfect timing. We can rest in that truth.
As the hunger pangs hit over the 21 day fast, in the first few days I quickly learnt the importance of fixing my focus. I consciously removed the focus from food and the hunger pangs I felt. I spent a couple of minutes in prayer before either focussing on a new task or re-focussing on my current task. Then before I knew it, 30-45 minutes would pass without me noticing. It became a timely and consistent reminder over the 21 days that what we focus on becomes larger in our minds and lives. Therefore, we really must ask ourselves,
Are those things that I’m fixing my focus on really what should be prioritized in my life?
Direction for the year was one of my key areas during this fast. I looked at my life broadly: spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically then sought God’s guidance as I planned and prepared for 2019 from a broader perspective, then more specifically.
Some of my goals/commitments coming out of this fast include:
- Maintaining consistent & healthy eating habits
- Having intentional daily reflection
- Adding a short nightly stretching routine
- Dedicating short pockets of time twice daily to read books on personal development
I’m thankful for what God has shown me during this fast and I look forward to what else He has in store this year. How was your January?
