Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. Matthew 5:15 (NIV)
This verse continues on from the passage I started last week where Jesus encourages us to stand out as his light in the world. Two things really stood out to me in this verse. Firstly, the lamp is put on its stand, not just any stand, the lamp has a specific stand. At times, people may try to fit us on other stands which they think may suit us. However, God has created a particular stand for us and when we are placed on our stand, the one for which we were created, then we are able to accomplish God’s purpose.
Secondly, the lamp on its stand gives light to everyone in the house. When we stand out for Jesus, seeking to achieve what God has called us to, it also has the consequence of influencing others. We cause others around us who are touched by the light of God through us to take notice. It’s not just about us anymore…
I pray that God gives us the courage to be put on the right stand as chosen by Him alone (not others) and seek to positively impact those around us from that platform.
